Brainstorming

We had a whole lesson of thinking what could be done with the Ruskin Hall, what kind of individual pieces we could make. It was kind of interesting not to hide your ideas, but to share them with everyone. I came up with these ideas :

  • Create a video that one of the sect members filmed, which shows some kind of a ritual. Use the computer room; create dark spooky atmosphere and show that video in all computers at the same tame repeatedly.
  • Create an installation of 'old' newspapers with articles of the events in 2013.
We worked in groups, but afterwards we all put our ideas on the wall :

In my group we started to chat about random spooky things and someone mentioned a voodoo doll. I decided that it would be quite interesting to make one but really huge, human size. I think I am going to stick with this idea and improve it further.

Context

All though we are working individually, we still needed to decide the theme for the Ruskin Hall so our final pieces could be combined into one attraction. After all day of thinking we came up with a lot of suggestions, but we needed only one and this is it :

This is the story produced through the brainstorming session in class. Students decided on the following as a context for a future museum at Ruskin Hall.

(a) We have concluded that our building in the distant future exists as a museum.

(b) Its name (pending) is: The Ruskin Experience, the fall of the Niksurites

(c) It is said that in it’s time Ruskin Hall had a lot more going on than just your average art school. In 2013, a scandal took over the news for months as police and journalists unraveled evidence that students from the art and design course were running a secret sect called Niksurites (derives from ‘Ruskin’ in reverse).

Inside, investigators found secret spaces, objects, visual material and accounts of the events that took place…
A museum has now been created in the year 3089 where visitors can experience what it was like being part of the sect 1,076 years ago. Time has blurred truth from fiction and many stories have been told since…what is true and what isn’t still remains a mystery.

Project Number 4 Brief

Project Description:

As our art school enters it’s final months of occupancy, Ruskin Hall, our building, situated in the placid Quaker village of Bournville, will soon become a distant memory.

As you are the ‘de facto’ and ‘legitimate’ bearers of the final memories of Ruskin Hall School of Art and Design, your project is to produce a tourist attraction or theme park set in the distant future where tourists will pay to experience ‘a day in the life of Ruskin Hall’.

You will work individually, producing one aspect of the theme park. As a group, you will need to be conscious of your colleagues developments as all ideas must be combined into one attraction.

The final assessment will consist of a ‘live’ running of the park, Demitrios and Lisa will turn up as demanding and eager paying tourists; it will be your responsibility to ensure that they have an unforgettable experience. You can use any medium you like (painting, performance, sculpture, video, photography, machine, costume, print, text, sound, food etc.)
