Third day of work

This is how my work looks like after third day, approximately 15/20 hours of work :

I am trying to knit really tight so the base of my doll would be hard even without PVA glue. I am also knitting counterclockwise and that means that my knitted piece goes more into thickness then height. Because of that it takes me a bit longer to go up.

Material :

I bought these materials from the market and it was quite pricy. 2 meters x 2 meters of red, brown and black material costed me about 15 pounds. After I use all of it I will try to find the same colors for a smaller amount of money.

I thought of sewing different materials into one rather then knitting, but it doesn't look so good anymore :

I like this idea of adding masks on top of my sculpture. One mask represents one person. I believe nowadays multitask things are really important and this voodoo doll would suit perfectly for a sect that exists in 2013 :

21st century

What is iconic these days? What do people worship? Admire? Religion is long gone from our minds and hearts. Powerful people? Yes, we mostly admire other people and still it's only because we want to be like them, have what they have. I don't want to make a doll of some rich guy or something, that would be more sculpture than a doll. I also want to maintain the playful look of it. I believe that nowadays everything could become a voodoo doll. Starting from Ipad and ending with a Tedy bear. It's only because these days nothing  is of a huge importance, we have so much that we notice only a little part of everything. That is why my sketches are so random.

I will be knitting my doll and afterwards using technique that is similar to paper mache: I will put my knitted pieces into water with PVA glue,after the material absorbs it the water will dry and PVA glue will make the material a bit more harder and stable.

I thought that this idea would be quite suitable for an Art and Design voodoo doll, but it has too many different pieces and shapes. It would take too much time to make.

For this one I was inspired by an anime Avatar The Las Air Bender. There was this creature Koh the Face Stealer that could take your face if you showed him any kind of emotion. 

The is the sketch that I like the most :

This doll looks playful and has a simple shape that wont take me ages to knit. I decided to go with this idea and concentrate with the size of my doll not the complicity of shape.

First sketch

This is my first sketch  :

I thought of creating an installation that contains the doll, painting of a ritual that involves the doll and sign that says : touch it if you dare.

The story of this installation would be: somebody found the doll and thought that it's just a finished piece of some student project, but later a hidden painting was found that explained the real purpose of this doll. 

After discussing our ideas with this course students and Dem this is my feedback:

I have to go back with this image that I created in my head and think how could my doll look differently. Change the iconic appearance of voodoo doll and think of how would voodoo dolls look nowadays, in 21st century. 

My homework for next lesson : have sketches of 21st century voodoo doll.
