Day 20

Day twenty ( 125 hours) :

1 meter 18cm tall :

I still did not decided what to do so I could fix 'the Pizza Tower' and I found another problem. Originally, my final piece should come with a performance : one of the tourist would stick a needle in The Voodoo Doll. But here is the problem - although my sculpture weights a lot I am afraid that the needle wont go through the knit ( it is not a soft toy, the surface is quite hard even though it is knitted) and the person will use more strength and over turn the doll. I will try to catch Dem and ask his opinion tomorrow.

I am also not so sure about the masks :

I really like that pattern on my now existing doll and I am afraid that the masks will hide it.

Day 18

Day eighteen (115 hours) :

1 meter tall :

I starter to see a problem that is not that bad at the moment, but will be in the future : this whole piece is really heavy in the first 10cm of the base are holding all the weight. It started to collapse, but only in some places and that made my sculpture look like the Pizza Tower.

At the beginning of my sculpture I made some mistakes at knitting, counting or missing some loops, but I still continued on knitting. So now I see my mistake - I should have started it all from the beginning, because now the first 10-20 cm are really weak and that makes my sculpture crooked.

I am lost now, because I don't know if I should continue on going and maybe try to harden the base with real paper mache (glue, water, toilet paper). Or cut the bad 10-20cm base ( I would loose two/three days of work).

Day 15

Fifteenth day (85 hours) of knitting :

72cm tall :

At the beginning of this project I thought of making this voodoo doll 2 meters tall, but now I see that I don't have that much time. To knit one 360' circle it takes about 40 minutes. I usually end up knitting 8-10cm per day (approximately 5-7 hours). I will try to work faster and make it my size - 180cm/ 6 feet tall, but if it's not going to work, then my doll will be a bit smaller.

Day 14

Fourteen days (75 hours) of knitting:

At the moment, my sculpture is 63cm tall :

Me knitting :

I put PVA glue all over the knit; I spread the glue in layers as my knitted piece grows in hight :

Day 12

Twelve days (65 hours) of knitting :

This is how I cut the materials. If it's thick, then the strip would be smaller (3cm), but the red color that I bought is quite thin and that means I have to cut the strips about 5cm width :

Broke

So I broke my crochet needle while trying to pull out a strip of material through the loop :

I have more crochet needles, not the same size, but at least I wont need to stop my work.

Nine days of work

Nine days of knitting (50 hours)

The bottom of my sculpture started to collapse (not much, but I did not wanted to put any more weight on it). That's why to stabilize it I put PVA glue on the bottom from the inside. It done the job perfectly: the material absorbed the glue (did not changed the color) and became hard.

After the first 5cm from the bottom dried I put more glue above it as you can see in the pictures.

Six days of knitting

Sixth day of knitting and approximately 35 hours :

I went to the market for more material and tried to find similar colors for smaller amount of money. I managed to find red and black for 1 pound per meter that looks exactly the same. However, I had to change the brown color to light brown one and the price is the same - 1 pound per meter. I believe it wont be a problem as my sculpture will have a bit of a 'messy, made from rags' feeling.

I am surprised of how fast I use up all the materials that I buy. It looks a lot in the market, but when I come back and start knitting it just disappears. Second time in the market I bought 3x2 meters of red and brown material and 2x2 meters of black one. We will see how long is it going to last for me till the next day in market.
